The country of Scotland has offered us a great gift in the form of fabric: the Tartan.
Fine wools and cottons represent all the different clans of the Scottish Highland through an assembling of about 1024 textures of stripes and squares.
The tartan is the most instantly recognizable. From the Highland Games circuits of North America and Europe to the fashion catwalks of Milan, its provenance is unmistakable.
It is Scotland’s very own international brand identity, and what makes this all the more remarkable is that no other country lays claim to it.

The description which best defines a Tartan: a check-like arrangement of a tartan pattern or the ‘sett’, which is repeated over and over again until the desired length of cloth is produced.
Early tartans were simple checks of perhaps only two or three colors. The colors were extracted mainly from dye-producing plants, roots and berries local to a specific geographic area. These simple checks or tartans were worn by the people of the district where they were made, and as such became the area or clan tartan.
Tartan has now gained international popularity with people selecting and sporting a design of his or her fancy.
